Some New Art- Shrinky DInks Framed

I was asked to help out with a classroom art project that would be auctioned off at a school event.  So I hit up Pinterest and came up with a cool idea.

This is a screen shot of the image from Pinterest.  There was no website to link it too.  I just figured it was done with Shrinky Dinks.  

Here's the shapes the class made.

 I brought in plastic cups with different in diameters for them to trace circles.  Then,  the kids colored the plastic Shrinky Dinks with colored Sharpy Markers.  Lastly, the kids cut out the shapes.

These were fifth graders, so they did an excellent job.

Here's the final Classroom Art Project.

 My Mother in Law really liked the finished project and was bummed she didn't win the art at the auction.  So, another idea was hatched.  At Thanksgiving, I brought over all the supplies and together as a family we all made shapes.  I love the idea of everyone being involved.  Here's the final project.

Finding the right order to place all the shapes is part of the process, I wanted it to be symmetrical

I sorted it by color to make the piece balanced.

The center was hearts, lovely!

 The frame is a Ribba from Ikea.

I'm so happy withe results.

Craft Lab: Shrinky Dink Charm Bracelet

We decided to make a charm bracelet using almost every single Shrinky Dink we've ever made!

These were all made a year and half ago,
we pulled them out of of jewelry making supply box.
I needed to drill holes in all the pieces.
I got out the cordless drill and used my smallest drill bit.

Then my daughter and I added the plastic designs to jump rings

and attracted them to the bracelet.

Craft Lab: Shrinky Dink People

My daughter has been asking me everyday this summer to make Shrinky Dinks.
After my super duper organizing early this summer,
I have lost my Shrinky Dinks somewhere in my craft supplies.
I can't find them anywhere.
My mom asked me to help her make a bracelet for her friend
so she picked up a new pack(I'll save this project for another post)

First, we got everything out to cut the shapes.
I tried to use my Martha Stewart circle cutter,
but the plastic paper keep sliding around,
so I got out the Sizzix machine and had sucess.
The kiddies decided they wanted to cut out little people.

Here are the people and their clothes cut out and colored with permanent markers.
Aren't they cute?

I baked all the pieces separately, bodies, clothes, shoes etc.

Then, we layered the pieces on top of each other,
and placed them back in the toaster oven at a higher temperature for 20 more minutes.
This technique is classed fusing.
It basically just melts the layers of plastic together.

Here are the final Shrinky Dink people.
The edges are all rounded and the appear a little puffy.
They look like little cartoon people.

Hello Kitty Necklace

Here's another fun craft we did at my daughter's birthday party. Before the girls arrived, I traced each of them a Hello Kitty on Shrinky Dink plastic and punched a hole at the top. I also made the necklace before hand. I used stretchy plastic, a lobster claw closure, a couple of crunch beads and a few jump rings. This part took the longest. When the girls arrived at the party, I had them color each of them with permanent markers on the rough side of the plastic. I baked them off when they were busy playing with the real Hello Kitty. We gave them each their necklace as the party gift.
