Week 1
the doily bowl
The pressure was on this week to make my first of 52 crafts for the year. I had no idea what I was going to make. So, I headed into the cold garage/studio to see what I would come up with and found my stash of things to be dyed. I pulled out a few doilies and had an idea. Make a doily bowl. I checked online for a recipe to make fabric stiffener and got to work in the kitchen.

The pressure was on this week to make my first of 52 crafts for the year. I had no idea what I was going to make. So, I headed into the cold garage/studio to see what I would come up with and found my stash of things to be dyed. I pulled out a few doilies and had an idea. Make a doily bowl. I checked online for a recipe to make fabric stiffener and got to work in the kitchen.
to make stiffener:
2 tablespoons glue
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon alcohol
1 squirt of acrylic paint
2 tablespoons glue
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon alcohol
1 squirt of acrylic paint
I mixed up the stiffener in my new/vintage Pyrex bowl I inherited from my Grandma Mary. As I was making this, I was thinking she would have liked this craft.
The doily I used was oval, so I needed an oval shaped bowl. All I had on hand was this oval melamine bowl, which I covered in Glad wrap.
Then, I draped the wet doily over the covered bowl and placed it on a sheet of wax paper. I let it dry for about 24 hours.
Guess what? It wasn't very stiff. So, I grabbed the liquid starch and wet the whole thing. I did this by just pouring the starch it right on it the doily. Then, it dried for another 24 hours. Oh and I raised it up on a bowl, and pulled the edges down, so the bowl would be taller when done instead of wider.
