Craft 52 week 52: a decorative toilet seat

Craft 52
Week 52
Toilet Seat Art

It's been a great week!
I managed to stay on top of all my loose ends, with a huge list. As the week went along I kept adding to the list.  One last minute addition was to come up with a white elephant gift for a party on Friday night and I was at a loss. My husband headed over to Home Depot and brought me back a toilet seat to do something funny with it. I'm seriously not that funny. So I thought maybe a little sparkle on a toilet seat would be funny. Well, it was funny and kinda pretty too.  One of the party guests really loved it and we had tears being shed over this beauty.
Here it is up close.

I used an old shirt we had in the Goodwill box and cut it to fit on the top of the seat cover.  I glued the shirt on with Mod Podge and let it dry.  Then, I added a row of pennies a long the edge for some added sparkle.  Next up, I glued on a bunch of butterflies cut from some scrapbooking paper.  It didn't quite look right, so I added two rows of green sequined ribbon to outline the pennies.  To give the toilet seat a lacquered look, I added a thick coat of Mod Podge the night before the party, and you can see from the photos that some of the glue still needed to dry clear. I'm so glad someone had such a nice reaction to my art.  The family that took home this beauty are planning on hanging it on the wall.

Craft 52 week 49: Happy Birthday Garland

Lately I absolutely suck at blogging.  I've been making stuff and not photographing the final project.  I made this awesome Happy Birthday Garland and totally forgot to take a picture of the completed project.  So this is all you get.  Let me tell you it turned out super pretty.  I used gold 2" rounds for the centers and glued these silver glittered letters on top.  Fun project, didn't take too much time either.  I can't wait to make another one.

Craft 52 week 44: Crayon Art

Craft 52
week 44
Crayon Art

I made this last week with my daughter. Super easy and fun too!
I saw this idea over at Pinterest and thought it would be a great way to use up some crayons from our ever growing stash.
We just hot glued all the crayons to a blank canvas.  Then took a blow dryer and started on one end and slowly moved across to the other end.

this is a little messy, so please do this outdoors.

I'm going to frame this in either a Lucite shadow box or an all white deep frame from Ikea.

Craft 52 week 24: homemade sidewalk paint

 Craft 52
week 23

homemade sidewalk paint
Keeping the kids busy is my goal with this craft.  This was so easy  and I had all the stuff on hand.

You'll need:
side walk chalk
water
mallet/hammer
plastic baggies
bowls
paintbrushes

Have the kids put each color of chalk in to a zip lock bag, close it up and go to town with the mallet.  Mash up the chalk until it is dust.  Try to get all the lumps out.  Next, place chalk dust into the bowl and add a little water to make a paste.  Add water until you get a paint like consistency.   Then paint!  The kids pretty much did this all by themselves.  The best part of this craft, is keeps on going.  After were done for the day, we set the bowls aside so we can come back the next day, add water to the bowls again and start painting.  Have fun!

Craft 52 week 22: Miniature Art Redo

Craft 52
week 22
Miniature Art Redo
I picked up these little miniatures at the local thrift store for a few dollars a few weeks ago.  I have a couple of other mini pieces like these that I got years ago and really love.   These new minis were all the wrong colors so I had to tweak them a bit.

The Before

The frame is matted in a nice pink velvet.  The reds in the painting are the part that was not working.

The Before

The background was awful on this one.
Here's a work in progress shot.  I basically covered up the old painting and started a new.  The original paint was thick and 3 dimensional, so it was easy to repaint  the new colors over the old and still see the pattern.
The Beautiful Minis After
I love this one, I wonder why?  Maybe it because I painted my  new turquoise pot on it.

My new turquoise pot I picked up on vacation last month.

Craft 52 weel 23: Streak Painted Card

Craft 52
week 23
Streak Painted Card

We whipped this card up for one of our teachers to celebrate the end of the year.
I started with one of these cards from Michael's.
Then I punched the bottom edge of the card with this scalloped Martha Stewart craft punch.

I mixed up a color with the watercolor paints and made one stripe on the bottom edge.  Then, I dipped the brush into a water bath to lighten the color .  I did this after every stripe until the top.

The card turned out better then I'd imagined in my head.  Plus this was super quick and easy.

Craft 52 week 22: Turquiose Necklace Redo

Craft 52
Week 22
Turquoise Necklace Redo

I've found this necklace in my jewelry box and decided to give it an update. I'm going through a gold phase in my life right now and thought I could make a nice charm to hang a long side my new charms from Stella and Dot.

Here's the necklace before I cut it apart.  I discovered the turquoise was really a man made bead and not the real deal.

I added a few little sparkly beads to finish it off.
Here's the charm on my necklace.

week 20
Slime Time Again

We did this craft a while back and wouldn't you know it, on one of our recent furlough days off from school the kids wanted to make some slime or goo as we call it around here.
Here's my how to tutorial right here

The kiddies made a little bakery out of the slime.  We were invited to come in to shop and pick out our favorites.

Craft 52 week 20: Dip Dyed Napkins

Craft 52
week 20
Dip Dyed Napkins

This project was so much fun.

I've been so afraid of using RIT dye.  I had a serious aversion to it.  I've had this project sitting on work station in the craft lab for over a year.  I finally got the nerve up to try it.

I conquered  a big fear, and I'm so happy I did.  Some people are afraid of heights and flying, but I was afraid to dye fabric.  Not anymore!!!
Here's my inspiration from Anthropologie, no longer available.
please excuse the wrinkles, no time to iron

Here's a nice set of white cotton dinner napkins.

I mixed up the dye and went to work.  I just dipped the ends into the dye solution.  The first one I dipped dry, then I read the direction on the package and it said the cloth should be wet.  So I wet all the rest.  However, I liked the how the dry dipping turned out much better.

The dye color is Teal.  I highly recommend ordering the dye online, they have so many awesome colors now that I couldn't find anywhere locally.

The napkins on the line to dry.

The color was bright at this point, I still need to run them through the washer.

Blue hands.  I did have gloves on, but they just got in the way.

Here's another batch after I dipped them.  My sink looks gross, sorry!  It's covered in lots of paint from all my craft projects.
Hanging them up on the line to dry.

These hand towels turned out to be my favorite.

Here's the hand towels after washing. The color faded to a soft blue.

So there you have it, I would totally do this again.
