Ugly Holiday Decor Redo

This has to be the ugliest thing ever. Hello 1980's, your decor sucked.   I'm not sure if this is a yard sale purchase or a thrift store find.  I just knew I could give this baby a new modern look.

First, I ripped off all the silk flowers and lovely ribbon.   I had to get out my Spackle knife and scrape off the hot glue, then do a quick sanding to smooth out where the glue had been.

Next the fun part, spray painting.

I have to admit, I'm not very good at spray painting yet.  I make drips and use way to much paint.  But, I'm learning and it's seriously fun.

After the piece dried overnight, I painted on the Mod Podge and then glittered.  Oh, I have missed this task, it's been too long.

I did the front and the back different so we could have two different looks.

So there you have it, I took an old ugly thing and made it pretty again.  I little recycling, and the world is a better place.

Craft Lab: Daily Drop Cap LOVE

When, I started to see Jessica Hische's The Daily Drop Cap everywhere in the blog world, I knew I had to create something with her awesomeness as my inspiration. Everything is all about peace and love around here, so here's some LOVE. This took me about 10 hours to complete. I printed out the letters and drew them onto the painted canvas. Then, I painted for hours and hours. I love to paint, and found this to be very enjoyable. Thanks Jessica for your Daily Drop Caps!

Craft Lab: Glittery Wreath REDO before and after

My mom picked this wreath up for me for $.25 at a yard sale last weekend. What a deal! A little rain here kept me out of the studio for 5 days, it was a bit chilly for me. So, I put on layers and braved the cold . First, I cut and tore all the country off the wreath. Since there were 20 hearts, I choose 5 different glitters. I glittered 4 at a time. I used a fresh jar of Mod Podge, it was thick and gooey, and had a fresh Mod Podge smell. I love this stuff. I painted on the glue, then sprinkled on the glitter. I'm pretty darn quick now. It took about 30 minutes.

Craft Lab: BE MIND garland

Here's a quick tutorial on to make these glittery rosettes. The crepe rosettes are 3 1/2" wide, so I cut a round 4 1/4" of paper and glittered the edge of the paper. Then I cut a 2" scalloped circle and glittered that edge too. I cut the crepe paper edges with a decorative edge and glittered that edge. Next up, I layered all the pieces together and hot glued them. I used the bottom of a jar to press it all down flat. I strung it up white some 1/4" white grosgrain ribbon. Voila!

Craft Lab- Glittered Peace Sign

I'm seriously loving glitter painting. We whipped up this peace sign for my niece's Christmas present. I'm pretty sure she loved it. My six year old daughter helped with this one, here's the directions. Trace a large circle with pencil on a 12 by 12 black canvas. We used a large mixing bowl. Then we did the same thing with a slightly smaller bowl. Then, we took a ruler to make a one inch wide line down the middle. At the center point of the line, we made the left and right legs of the peace sign, both one inch wide. Next, we took leaf green acrylic paint and filled in all the void spaces and left the peace sign white. While this is drying, mix up your glitter. I didn't have the correct shade, so I blended, greens, golds, and browns to achieve the desired color of glitter. Because this is a large piece and the mod podge dries quickly, I worked in sections. Apply glue with a brush, then sprinkle with glittler. Make sure to reuse all the fallen glitter, as to not waste any. After the green glitter was applied and dried, we used silver tinsel glitter for the sign. There you have it!

Craft Lab: yarn wreath

I've been wanting to make a yarn wrapped wreath since last year. I just can't bring myself to spend the cash on a Styrofoam form, so I did a bit of recycling and cut up a card board box. I took a bowl and traced out a 14" circle. Then, I did the same thing in the center with a smaller bowl. I used a knife to cut the small circle first, then the larger one. Next, I took the yarn and wrapped it around the cardboard form all the way around. I had some left over glittery embellishments hanging around and added them to the front. I even bent a silver pipe cleaner into a butterfly and attached it. This project was wiped up in about an hour and a half.
